Mumbai-Pune Expressway Speed Limit Confusion Sparks Outrage Over Fines
A recent social media post has sparked outrage among motorists who frequent the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, with many slamming the government over unclear speed limits and excessive fines. The post, written by an X user, The Kaipullai, claims that drivers are being fined for adhering to reasonable speeds due to a lack of clear communication from authorities.
According to the user, speed cameras have been installed across the expressway and nearby areas, including Vashi, Panvel, and Pune, resulting in fines for drivers who unknowingly exceed the speed limit. The user shared a personal experience of receiving a challan for driving at 70 kmph on a road in Panvel where the speed limit was allegedly 60 kmph.
The post has drawn attention to a growing concern among travelers, who feel burdened by unexpected fines and a lack of clear signage on speed limits. Many netizens echoed similar sentiments, urging the authorities to provide better clarity on speed restrictions and avoid penalizing drivers unfairly.
The controversy has reignited debates over high toll charges and excessive fines on Indian highways. In June 2024, entrepreneur Sandeep Manudhane urged the Centre to remove all highway tolls, citing “extortionate taxation.” Another user highlighted an instance where they paid Rs 760 in toll for a 500 km journey, suggesting that the fee was excessive.
The issue has sparked a wider conversation about the need for clearer signage, more reasonable speed limits, and fairer fines on Indian highways.
