According to data revealed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)’s Monsoon-related disease report, there was a slight increase in malaria, hepatitis, and H1N1 (swine flu) cases in July 2024. On the other hand, Mumbai has reported a notable decline in dengue, leptospirosis, gastroenteritis, and chikungunya cases in July 2024 compared to July 2023 in Mumbai.
As per reports, malaria cases saw an uptick in July 2024 with 729 cases compared to 721 cases in July 2023.
Swine flu cases have also shown a similar trend. Swine flu cases rose from 106 in July 2023 to 161 in July 2024, a 51.89% increase. In June 2024, there were only 10 cases of swine flu.
Hepatitis cases also increased from 144 in July 2023 to 146 in July 2024.
Physicians have warned that more cases are expected in August as the monsoon continues. This is because continuous rainfall washes away mosquito breeding sites, but when rain stops and water accumulates, mosquitoes breed and cause a spike in diseases.
Meanwhile, dengue cases fell significantly from 353 in June 2023 to 93 in June 2024. In July 2023, there were 685 cases, but for July 2024, the number dropped to 535, which is a 22% decrease.
Gastroenteritis cases also decreased, from 1,767 in July 2023 to 1,239 in July 2024. However, it is an increase from June 2024, when only 722 cases were reported.

Moreover, the number of cases of leptospirosis and chikungunya decreased from 413 and 27 in July 2023 to 141 and 25 in July 2024.
Additionally, in July 2024, the BMC conducted a house-to-house fever census covering around 11.95 lakh houses and 55.80 lakh individuals. During this survey, 84,116 patients received prophylaxis for leptospirosis. Prophylaxis for leptospirosis involves taking an antibiotic to lessen the chance of contracting the bacterial infection.
Besides, statewide data from January to July 2024 shows progress in disease management in Maharashtra. Malaria cases decreased to 7,447 with six deaths, down from 29 deaths in 2023. Dengue cases dropped from 6,159 to 4,965, with fewer deaths, from 59 to three. Chikungunya cases also decreased from 1,702 to 1,075, with no fatalities in either year.
