Traveling between Mumbai and Goa is set to become quicker and more convenient with the upcoming launch of a RoPAX ferry service by M2M Ferries. This service will accommodate both passengers and vehicles, enhancing the travel experience on one of India’s most frequented routes.

M2M Ferries, already recognized for its Mumbai-Mandwa Ro-Ro service, is expanding its offerings by acquiring a 15-year-old RoPAX vessel from Italy, which is now being serviced in Mumbai. Once operational, this ferry is anticipated to make the Mumbai-Goa trip in just six and a half hours, greatly improving travel times compared to traditional road options. The company is currently in the process of securing the necessary approvals from the Director General of Shipping and other regulatory authorities before officially starting the service.

As reported by Hindustan Times, an official from M2M Ferries stated, “We intend to run the RoPAX service from Ferry Wharf in Mazgaon, Mumbai, to Mormugao Port Authority in Goa. Additionally, we are discussing with the Goa government the option of adding a stop at Panaji to enhance accessibility.”

Enhancing India’s Ferry Network:

The new RoPAX ferry is designed to carry 620 passengers and 60 cars, making it a spacious and efficient travel choice.

In the meantime, Shyam Jagannathan, the Director General of Shipping, has confirmed that M2M Ferries’ application is currently being reviewed. Pradeep Sudhakar, the Chief Ship Surveyor, added that the necessary documents have been forwarded to the Indian Register of

Shipping for final approval.

Enhancing India’s Ferry Network:

If successfully launched, the Mumbai-Goa RoPAX service will significantly enhance India’s ferry transportation network, joining existing services like the Hazira-Ghogha ferry in Gujarat.

Moreover, the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) is in the process of constructing new jetties for Ro-Ro services at Kashid, Revdanda, and Dighi along the Raigad coast, with an expected completion timeline of 18 months. The state government is also planning a Ro-Ro service that will connect to the upcoming industrial hub at Dighi.

With the new Mumbai-Goa RoPAX ferry, travelers can anticipate a quicker, more comfortable, and picturesque alternative to road and rail travel. As the approval process progresses, this service has the potential to greatly improve connectivity between Mumbai and Goa, making travel more efficient than ever.
