Mumbai: A tragic road accident in South Mumbai’s Khetwadi area on Tuesday claimed the life of a nine-month-old infant, while the child’s grandmother sustained serious injuries after being run over by a school bus. The incident, which was captured on CCTV, has sparked concern over student drop-off safety and reckless vehicle movement near schools.

According to police, the woman had gone to pick up her granddaughter, a student of JB Soman School in Colaba, from a school bus drop-off point. At around 12.23 pm, CCTV footage shows the young girl alighting from the bus as her grandmother, holding the infant in her arms, approaches and holds the child’s hand to cross the road in front of the stationary vehicle.

Moments later, the bus suddenly starts moving, knocking the woman and both children to the ground. The footage shows the front right wheel of the bus running over the woman and the infant, while narrowly missing the granddaughter by just a few centimetres. The infant died on the spot, while the woman suffered critical injuries.

The granddaughter managed to crawl to safety as passersby rushed to help. A scooter rider is also seen stopping in time to avoid further tragedy.

Police have registered a case in connection with the incident and arrested the bus driver. Further investigation is underway to determine lapses in safety and responsibility.
