Disguised as a woman, Ranjeet Kumar looted homes across Mumbai and amassed wealth worth ₹57 lakh before police cracked the case.

A man who lived a double life, posing as a woman to commit thefts in Mumbai’s upscale neighbourhoods has finally been arrested by the police. Identified as Ranjeet Kumar alias Munna, the accused was found in possession of stolen goods and cash valued at over ₹57 lakh.

For years, Ranjeet evaded detection by dressing in sarees, salwar-kameez, and burqas, even covering his face with a veil to conceal his identity. He had mastered the gait and mannerisms of a woman, allowing him to blend seamlessly into his surroundings and outsmart CCTV surveillance. According to police, he would often change into women’s clothes near isolated railway tracks before and after committing thefts.

The breakthrough came after a theft was reported in Malad on March 17. Mumbai Police scanned footage from more than 150 CCTV cameras and eventually set a trap that led to Ranjeet’s arrest.

During interrogation, he revealed the location of his stolen assets. When police searched his residence, they found a gold-melting furnace, 360 grams of gold worth ₹35 lakh, silver jewellery, female garments used in his disguise, and a large amount of cash. Further investigation revealed that he owned a flat in Mumbai, a bungalow and agricultural land in Bihar, and had made down payments totalling ₹16 lakh for more property in both locations. He also had ₹13 lakh in a bank account. All assets acquired through theft have been seized.

Police confirmed that eight theft cases are already registered against Ranjeet at various police stations across the city. The scale of his operation, combined with his skill at disguise and evasion, has shocked investigators. Further probes are underway to identify additional crimes linked to him.

Authorities say the case stands out for the thief’s unusual tactics and the extent to which he used his stolen wealth to build a seemingly respectable life.
