Mumbai’s New Coastal Road Promenade Outshines Marine Drive – Everything You Can Do There
Mumbai has always been celebrated for its sea-facing promenades, with Marine Drive long considered the jewel of the city’s coastline. But now, the newly opened Coastal Road Promenade has taken that experience up a notch. It’s bigger, longer, and offers a whole new way to enjoy the Arabian Sea — especially for those who’ve been craving more open, accessible waterfront space in the heart of South Mumbai. Whether you’re a Mumbaikar looking for your next evening hangout or a visitor wanting to soak in the city’s scenic beauty, here’s everything you need to know about this stunning new addition to Mumbai’s landscape.
What Exactly Is the Coastal Road Promenade in Mumbai?
The Mumbai Coastal Road Promenade is a newly launched stretch of pedestrian-friendly walkway that runs alongside the city’s under-construction coastal road project. Designed with both leisure and functionality in mind, it offers sweeping views of the sea, making it a perfect spot to walk, jog, cycle, or just sit and relax. This space reopens a part of the city — especially the Worli Seaface — that was previously dominated by construction and traffic. And unlike the older promenades, this one comes with added amenities, thoughtful planning, and a whole new route to explore.

Where Is It Located and How Much of It Is Open to the Public?
The currently accessible section of the Coastal Road Promenade stretches 5.25 km, from Priyadarshini Park near Malabar Hill all the way to Worli, passing through iconic points like Haji Ali and Baroda Palace. While this is already longer than Marine Drive, the total length will eventually span 7.5 km once construction wraps up completely. So if you’re visiting now, you can still enjoy most of the promenade, with more parts scheduled to open in the coming months.
Why Should You Visit the Coastal Road Promenade?
Unlike many other urban attractions, the Coastal Road Promenade is entirely free to access, and it’s built to serve multiple interests. Morning walkers and joggers will find a wide, open path to get in their steps while enjoying the sea breeze. Cyclists finally have a dedicated track that allows uninterrupted riding, with well-designed ramps at underpasses to move around easily. If you’re not the active type, that’s fine too — there are plenty of benches for just sitting and soaking in views of the water, the changing skyline, or even just the peace that this space offers in contrast to Mumbai’s usual hustle. Evening visits are particularly special thanks to spectacular sunset views.
How Can You Get There?
Access to the promenade has been made easier with multiple pedestrian subways, especially useful for those coming from key roads in South Mumbai. You can enter via Subway No. 4 from Bhulabhai Desai Marg, Subway No. 6 from Haji Ali Junction, Subway No. 11 near Worli Dairy School, or Subway No. 14 at Bindu Madhav Thackeray Chowk in Worli. All these entry points are pedestrian-friendly, and many include ramps for wheelchair users and cyclists. There’s also parking available near Worli Dairy for those coming by car.

Where Does the Coastal Road Begin and End?
The Mumbai Coastal Road itself starts at the Princess Street Flyover near Marine Drive and currently ends at Worli, seamlessly connecting to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. This makes it an important infrastructure upgrade for drivers, but pedestrians can only access the adjacent promenade through designated underpasses. With speeds of up to 80 km/h on the road, pedestrian crossings are strictly not allowed on the actual highway.
Is the Coastal Road Open at Night?
Yes, the Mumbai Coastal Road is now operational 24/7. While earlier timings limited access to between 7 am and midnight, the road is now open round the clock. However, pedestrian access to the promenade itself may be more limited depending on security and lighting, so it’s still best enjoyed during daylight and early evening hours.
