Mumbai, June 9 — A major tragedy unfolded near Mumbra railway station in Thane district on Monday morning, when eight passengers reportedly fell off an overcrowded local train. According to officials, at least 13 people were injured in the incident, with fears of multiple fatalities.

The Central Railway confirmed that the mishap occurred due to severe overcrowding on board. “Some passengers travelling towards Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) fell from the train,” said Swapnil Dhanraj Nila, Chief Public Relations Officer of Central Railway.

The accident reportedly took place when two local trains — one heading towards Kasara and another towards CSMT — crossed each other. Passengers standing on the footboards of both trains came dangerously close and collided, leading to several falling onto the tracks.

“It is not a train collision,” Nila clarified. “Passengers travelling on footboards of both trains got entangled as they passed each other. On curved tracks, trains tilt slightly, possibly reducing the gap and contributing to the incident.”

The guard of the Kasara-bound train informed the control room about the injured individuals spotted along the tracks around 9:30 am. Emergency response teams, including railway officials and police, rushed to the site and moved the injured to nearby hospitals.

While the Central Railway has not confirmed any deaths, local police officials told PTI that at least three passengers are feared dead. Six injured passengers were found along the railway tracks between Mumbra and Diva stations.

Local train services on the affected line were also disrupted following the incident. Visuals from the site, shared by ANI, show emergency teams at the scene as officials continue to investigate the cause of the tragedy.

An official inquiry into the incident has been launched.
