Pune: The rising number of accidents involving school transport vehicles in Pune has sparked urgent calls for safety audits. Shivajinagar constituency MLA Siddharth Shirole raised the issue during the ongoing Winter Session of the Legislature in Nagpur, emphasizing the immediate need for thorough inspections of school transport vehicles.

Citing a recent fire incident involving a school bus in Kharadi, Shirole highlighted the critical safety risks faced by students. He stated, “Over 8,000 vehicles transport schoolchildren daily in Pune, and periodic inspections of these vehicles are essential. In case of emergencies such as fires or accidents, municipal corporations and the Regional Transport Office (RTO) must provide adequate training for preventive measures and evacuation procedures.”

Shirole also emphasized the need for regular checks to ensure fire safety measures are in place on buses and vans. He recommended equipping vehicles with appropriate fire prevention systems, training drivers and staff on their use, and educating them on safely evacuating students during emergencies.
