Navale Bridge Tragedy: Design Flaws and Steep Descent Makes

Pune, November 14, 2025: A major accident on Navale Bridge claimed eight lives when a container truck, allegedly with failed brakes, collided with multiple vehicles along the Pune-Satara highway. The truck reportedly struck vehicles for nearly a kilometre before the crash, highlighting the recurring dangers of this stretch.

Investigations suggest that the frequent accidents at Navale Bridge are largely due to faulty road design. Vehicles traveling from Bengaluru towards Pune pass through the new Katraj tunnel, after which a steep descent near the bridge often causes drivers to lose control, especially with heavy vehicles. Past reports and committee inspections have repeatedly flagged this as an accident-prone zone.

Despite multiple warnings and temporary measures such as speed breakers and rumblers, serious accidents continue. Officials note that heavy vehicles often lose control at the bend following the steep slope, leading to brake failures and collisions.

Navale Bridge and its surrounding area have a grim record: from 2014 to 2022185 accidents were reported within a 3.5 km stretch from Dari Bridge to Navale and Dhayari Bridge.

In the latest accident, two containers and a car caught fire. Rescue teams used water jets to control the flames. Tragically, the victims included two men from the container and two men, two women, and one girl from the car, totaling seven bodies recovered. Numerous other vehicles were damaged, and several people were injured in the chain collision leading up to the fire.

Authorities continue to stress the urgent need for structural changes and improved safety measures to prevent further tragedies at this notorious section of the highway.
