On Monday evening around 6:45 PM, commuters traveling between Vashi and Sanpada railway stations were alarmed to see a human hand hanging out of the boot of a moving Toyota Innova.

A concerned motorist recorded the unsettling sight and quickly shared the video online, prompting a surge of speculation and fear — ranging from kidnapping to foul play. The video gained rapid traction on social media and was soon brought to the attention of Navi Mumbai police.

Acting swiftly, the police, along with the crime branch, launched an investigation and managed to trace the vehicle by 8:30 PM near Ghatkopar. Upon interception, officers discovered that the situation was not a crime scene, but an elaborate Instagram reel gone wrong.

A group of three young men from Mumbai, who were in Navi Mumbai to attend a wedding, had orchestrated the scene as part of a promotional video for a laptop deal.

According to police, the reel was scripted to show a biker stopping the car after seeing the hand, only for the person in the boot to suddenly sit up and declare, “Got afraid? But I’m not dead. I’m alive. However, listen to the amazing offer that we have on laptops.” The group presented their video footage to the authorities, confirming the act was staged.

Though no FIR was registered at the time of reporting, the police have expressed grave concern over the recklessness of such acts. “This kind of behavior creates unnecessary fear and wastes valuable public resources,” said a police official.

He added that legal action is being considered under sections related to public mischief and endangerment.

Officials are now urging citizens, particularly youth, to act responsibly on social media and refrain from stunts that could cause public disturbance.

The incident has reignited conversations around the growing obsession with viral content and the lengths to which some individuals are willing to go for internet fame.
