The proposed new Mahabaleshwar project promises to boost tourism and agribusiness in the region, bringing long-awaited development to the Koyna area. For decades, the people of Koyna have suffered due to oppressive projects like the Koyna Dam, Tiger Reserve, and Buffer Zone.

Local leader H.B. Jangam emphasized that it’s time for the area to benefit from development. “The people of Koyna have endured immense hardship. Now, they deserve opportunities,” Jangam stated in a press release.

The new project encompasses 60 villages in Mahabaleshwar taluka, with the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation as the authority. This region is rich in history, with forts like Vasota, Mahimandan Fort, and Raje Chandra Rao Wada, and legendary temples like Sri Kshetra Mallikarjuna and Gadi of Ashta Swayambhu Shivalaya.

The area’s natural beauty, including picturesque waterfalls and abundant water, makes it an ideal tourism hub. Locals will benefit from job opportunities in tourism and agribusiness.

However, Jangam stressed that rules protecting tribal land should also apply to Koyna dam victims’ land. “Land of Koyna dam victims should only be sold to locals, just like tribal land,” he said.

Key demands include local approval for project implementation, no forced land acquisition, and protected land rights.

Jangam assured full co-operation if the project prioritizes local interests. “We will support the project if it benefits our people,” he said.

A new era of development and growth awaits Mahabaleshwar, bringing hope to the long-neglected Koyna area.
