Mandatory testing and stamping of speed-detection devices aim to improve enforcement accuracy and road safety.

Starting July 1, 2025, all radar-based speed measurement equipment used for traffic monitoring will require mandatory verification and official stamping, the government announced on Friday. The new regulations, notified by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, aim to enhance road safety and ensure precise enforcement of speed limits across the country.

These measures, notified under the Legal Metrology (General) Rules, 2011, apply to microwave Doppler radar equipment, widely used to detect vehicle speeds on roads. The rules were finalised after extensive consultations with stakeholders, including the Indian Institute of Legal Metrology, Regional Reference Laboratories, manufacturers, and vehicle certification bodies.

“These rules will come into force from July 1, 2025, providing sufficient time for industries and enforcement agencies to comply with the provisions,” the ministry said in an official statement.

Under the new framework, speed measurement devices must meet strict technical and safety standards. They are required to undergo proper calibration, function reliably under varying environmental conditions, and be tamper-proof. Only after meeting these criteria will the devices receive official certification and stamps, making them eligible for field deployment.

The move is expected to bring widespread benefits:

  • For citizens, it will ensure accurate speed readings and fair enforcement, thereby reducing chances of wrongful penalties and improving road safety.
  • For manufacturers, the rules provide a well-defined regulatory roadmap in line with global standards, fostering quality production and innovation.
  • For enforcement agencies, verified equipment will boost the credibility of their operations and aid in better compliance monitoring.

The ministry emphasised that this initiative marks a significant shift toward data-driven traffic governance. By enhancing the reliability of speed enforcement tools, the government aims to reduce road accidents, promote disciplined driving, and minimise the economic and social costs of unsafe road behaviour.
