Pune: It is crucial to keep yourself updated with the new SIM card regulations that will take effect from December 1, especially if you are a mobile phone user. The government has recently rescheduled the implementation from October 1 to December 1. Whether you are planning to purchase a new SIM or you are a SIM card vendor, it is essential to comprehend these new guidelines.

The Department of Telecommunications is implementing new regulations for the purchase and sale of SIM cards in order to combat the increasing number of scams and fraud cases involving counterfeit SIMs. These rules will be enforced across the country starting from December 1, to reduce the prevalence of such incidents.

In light of the detrimental impact of fraudulent SIMs, the Central Government is unwavering in its commitment to implement and enforce stringent regulations. Those who breach these regulations will face penalties, which may include fines and imprisonment.

One of the most notable changes is the mandatory verification process that all SIM card dealers must undergo. To sell SIMs, registration is now a requirement, and telecom operators are responsible for conducting police verification.

Non-compliance with this regulation may result in a fine of Rs 10 lakh.

Customers who wish to purchase SIM cards for their existing phone numbers are required to undergo Aadhaar scanning and provide demographic data.

The issuance of SIM cards in bulk is now subject to new regulations. Only those with a business connection are allowed to acquire SIM cards in bulk. Nevertheless, individuals can still obtain up to 9 SIM cards using a single ID, just like before.

The implementation of the new rules will prohibit the issuance of SIM cards in large quantities. It is important to note that once a SIM card is deactivated, the associated number will only become available for use by another individual after a period of 90 days.

Vendors selling SIM cards are required to register by November 30 to adhere to the new regulations. Failure to comply may result in penalties of up to Rs 10 lakh and potential imprisonment.
