Pune: The year 2023 is about to end in just a few days prompting widespread preparations to bid adieu to the old and embrace the new. Numerous individuals are gearing up for celebratory gatherings and libations on the year’s final day.

As reports indicate, the groundwork for ushering in the new year is already underway, with parties being arranged to mark the occasion, often accompanied by the consumption of alcoholic beverages. For those contemplating hosting a New Year’s Eve party, it is imperative to be aware of the regulations governing alcohol storage within the confines of one’s residence, with each state having its own set of guidelines.

Goa stands out as a premier destination for New Year revelry, with a multitude of parties slated to take place in the region. Notably, in Goa, residents are permitted to store up to 18 bottles of beer and 24 bottles of country liquor in their homes. Meanwhile, in Maharashtra, the allowance is 12 bottles of liquor for home storage. Rajasthan, another state, permits the storage of 18 bottles of liquor in households.

Yuvraj Shinde, Deputy Superintendent of the State Excise Department in Pune, sheds light on the regulations in Maharashtra, stating, “Residents are allowed to store 12 bottles of 1-liter capacity each of potent alcohol types such as whiskey, rum, vodka, etc., but only those holding a valid alcohol license or permit.”

In adherence to Delhi High Court regulations, residents in Delhi are permitted to store liquor in their homes. Individuals aged 25 and above can store nine liters of whiskey, rum, or vodka, and up to 18 liters of beer or wine. Meanwhile, in Punjab, those hosting a New Year’s gathering can store two bottles each of domestic and foreign liquor at home, with the option to exceed this limit requiring an annual fee of Rs 1,000 and the acquisition of a license.

Moving to Haryana, the regulations stipulate that six bottles of country liquor and 18 bottles of foreign liquor can be kept in a household. For those desiring to store a larger quantity, a monthly fee of 200 rupees and the acquisition of a license are requisite.

Hosts can plan their New Year festivities in accordance with these state-specific regulations governing the storage of liquor at home.
