NGO’s from Pune to remove invasive plants from Taljai hills on Oct 21

The yellow cosmos, seen strewn around the ghat sections of Pune and also on the hills of the city might look picturesque, but in reality it is harming the local ecology.

These invasive plant species is affecting our native species of biodiversity at a great scale and at a faster rate.

Dr Sachin Punekar, founder president of Biospheres told Pune Pulse that these species wiping out our native species. These are the second biggest threat to our habitat. Cosmos Sulphureus is a Mexican native which is now commonly seen on hills of Pune as well as ghat sections in Mulshi, Tamhini, Bhor, Velha taluka.

Biospheres alongwith several NGOs, environmentalists, nature lovers, social activists have organised an initiative on Taljai Tekdi to remove these Cosmos on October 21 at 7.30 am.

Pune based Biospheres, an NGO working towards spreading awareness on the various species harming the local biodiversity has started Movement Against Biological Invasion, an initiative to remove the harmful weeds, grass across Pune and Western Maharashtra.

The initiative is organised by Biospheres Pune alongwith Adventure Foundation Pune, Environment Department PMC, Forest department, Savitribai Phule Pune University (Geography and Botany department) Sardar Haibatrao Shilimkar Pratishthan, Area Sabha Association of Pune, Amhi Bhorkar Sanstha, Anantrao Pawar Mahavidyalaya, Paryavaran Manch, Bhartiya Majdoor Sangh, Jaldevata Seva Abhiyaan, Ramnadi Restoration Mission, Sahyadri Search and Rescue Force and Shri Shivpratishthan Hindustan.
