No COVID-19 Case Detected in Pune So Far Amid Mild Nationwide Surge

India is witnessing a slight uptick in COVID-19 cases, with 257 active infections currently reported across the country. The majority of these cases are from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra. However, officials have confirmed that no COVID-19 case has been detected in Pune as of now.
“In light of these developments, a review meeting of experts from NCDC, EMR division, Disaster Management Cell, ICMR, and Central government hospitals was convened under the chairpersonship of Director General of Health Services (DGHS). The meeting concluded that the current Covid-19 situation in India remains under control. As of May 19, 2025, the number of active Covid-19 cases in India stands at 257, a very low figure considering the country’s large population,” the officials said.
Here are five key updates on the current COVID-19 situation:
1. Active Cases Concentrated in a Few States
The Union Health Ministry’s data, updated on May 12, shows 257 active cases nationwide. Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra are reporting the highest numbers, while other states, including regions like Pune, have not recorded any recent cases.
2. New COVID-19 Variants Behind the Surge
The rise in infections is linked to the JN.1 variant — a descendant of the Omicron BA.2.86 strain. The WHO classified JN.1 as a ‘variant of interest’ in December 2023. Sub-variants such as LF.7 and NB.1.8 have also been identified among recent cases.
3. Southeast Asia Facing a Fresh Wave
Countries including Singapore, Hong Kong, Thailand, and China are seeing a notable increase in COVID-19 cases, primarily driven by the JN.1 variant. Singapore reported over 14,000 cases in early May. Experts warn that India could witness a similar pattern due to declining immunity.
4. Celebrities Among New Infections
Australian cricketer Travis Head has reportedly tested positive for COVID-19, though his continued participation in the IPL remains unclear. Sunrisers Hyderabad coach Daniel Vettori confirmed the diagnosis. Bollywood actress Shilpa Shirodkar also announced on Monday that she had tested positive.
5. No Signs of Increased Severity
So far, health authorities have found no evidence that the current variants are more dangerous or highly transmissible. Nonetheless, officials urge the public to continue following safety measures to avoid a larger outbreak.
The Health Ministry continues to monitor the situation closely and advises basic precautions such as mask-wearing in crowded places and maintaining hygiene.
