No HMPV Cases Reported In State, Maharashtra Health Department Takes Precautionary Measures

The state’s health department has issued a reassuring statement, confirming that no cases of Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) have been detected within the state’s borders. This announcement comes amidst a surge in HMPV cases in China, sparking concerns globally .
As a proactive measure, the health department has initiated a survey of cold and cough patients to vigilantly monitor for potential HMPV cases. Director of Health Department Dr. Nitin Ambadekar emphasized that HMPV is a common respiratory virus, typically causing upper respiratory tract infections, with a seasonal pattern similar to the flu.
HMPV is a viral respiratory infection that causes symptoms similar to the common cold. The virus was first identified in the Netherlands in 2001 and has been detected globally, with cases often reported during winter and early summer.
While no cases have been reported in the state, the health department’s proactive approach aims to ensure preparedness and prevent potential outbreaks. The department’s surveillance efforts will focus on monitoring cold and cough patients, enabling swift identification and response to any potential HMPV cases.
As India’s health agencies continue to monitor the situation closely, citizens are advised to take general precautions, such as using handkerchiefs or towels for coughing and sneezing, and practicing good hygiene .
