No More Toll Booth Delays! India Rolls Out Rs.3,000 Annual & Rs.30,000 Lifetime Passes
Travelling on India’s highways may soon become hassle-free with the government considering the launch of annual and lifetime toll passes. This initiative aims to ease congestion at toll plazas and provide a cost-effective alternative to the current toll payment system.
The Ministry of Road Transport & Highways is in the final stages of reviewing this proposal. The new system will offer two options:
– Annual Toll Pass: Available for ₹3,000, allowing unlimited travel on national highways and expressways for a year.
– Lifetime Toll Pass: Valid for 15 years, available for a one-time payment of ₹30,000.
These passes will be integrated into the existing FASTag system, ensuring a smooth transition without the need for extra gadgets or costs.
At present, commuters can only use a monthly toll pass, which costs around ₹340 per month (₹4,080 annually). However, these passes are restricted to one toll plaza, making them inconvenient for frequent highway users. The new passes would remove this restriction, allowing unlimited access across all toll roads in India.
Private vehicle owners, especially middle-class commuters, are expected to benefit the most. Currently, private vehicles generate 26% of all toll revenue and contribute to long queues at toll booths, especially during peak hours. The government hopes to cut delays and provide financial relief to regular highway users.
The government is also considering reducing toll fees per kilometre to further ease the financial burden on commuters. Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari recently stated that the government has completed its research on toll tax reforms and is preparing to introduce a plan to address public concerns.
If implemented, these measures could transform highway travel in India, making it more efficient and affordable for millions of daily commuters.
