Onion traders in Nashik go on indefinite strike

Nashik, Sep 21 : With no solution being found to pending demands of onion traders, they called for an indefinite strike from Wednesday, leading to suspension of onion auction at all 15 Agriculture Produce Market Committees (APMCs) and sub-market committees in the district.
After the central government raised export duty on onions, angry onion farmers have protested many times before. To pacify them, the Centre then decided to purchase onions from NAFED. Even after that, there was great dissatisfaction among farmers, who staged many agitations against the BJP-led government.
As no solution could be found to the pending demands of onion traders in a meeting with the district collector today, traders suspending auction of onions from today.
Also, as traders have to bear financial loss due to rise in export price of onions, they have called for an
indefinite bandh, as a result, no auction of onions will take place at all 15 market committees and sub-market committees in the district.
The Nashik District Onion Traders Association has demanded for the roll back of 40 per cent export duty on onions that was levied last month. In addition to that, they also want to reduce the market fees from Rs one per quintal to 50 paise.
