Only One Day Left To Install HSRP Plates Or Face ₹1,000 Fine In Maharashtra
Transport department warns strict action from January 1 as deadline ends on December 31
Vehicle owners in Maharashtra have just one day left to install High Security Registration Plates (HSRP) and avoid hefty fines up to ₹1,000. From January 1, strict enforcement will begin against vehicles that do not comply with the mandatory HSRP rule, transport officials have confirmed.
The HSRP system has been made compulsory for all vehicles registered before April 1, 2019. Despite multiple extensions granted by the state government, a significant number of vehicles are still running without the mandated number plates. Officials estimate that more than 40 lakh vehicles across Maharashtra have not yet installed HSRP plates.
According to the transport department, the final deadline for installation is December 31. After this date, vehicles found without HSRP plates will be penalised under the Motor Vehicles Act. For a first-time offence, vehicle owners may be fined ₹1,000. Repeat violations could attract higher penalties, with fines escalating up to ₹10,000 in certain cases.
Across the state, around 35 per cent of eligible vehicles are still without HSRP plates, despite nearly one crore vehicles having already completed the process.
Transport Commissioner has reiterated that no further extension is planned. He stated that enforcement teams will begin checking vehicles rigorously from the New Year, and owners should not expect any relaxation once the deadline expires.
Authorities have also clarified that tampering with number plates or replacing an original HSRP with a fancy or non-standard plate will invite additional penalties. In such cases, fines may be imposed separately for plate alteration, apart from the penalty for non-compliance.
The HSRP system is aimed at enhancing vehicle security and curbing crimes such as theft, cloning of number plates, and misuse of vehicles in illegal activities. The plates come with tamper-proof features, a chromium-based hologram, and a unique laser-etched code linked to the vehicle’s registration details.
Vehicle owners have been advised to book their HSRP installation through authorised vendors only and ensure the plate is fixed as per guidelines issued by the transport department.
With enforcement set to tighten from January 1, officials have urged motorists to act immediately and complete the installation process before the deadline to avoid fines and legal trouble.
