OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, has named Pragya Misra as its inaugural employee in India. Currently serving as the Public Affairs Director at Truecaller, Misra is set to take on the role of head of public policy affairs for OpenAI in India, potentially assuming the position by the end of the month. This significant decision by Sam Altman’s company comes at a crucial time when concerns regarding the misuse of artificial intelligence, particularly in the form of deepfake videos, are widespread, especially amidst the ongoing Lok Sabha elections in India.

With a background in communication and public affairs, Pragya Misra brings valuable experience to her new role. Prior to her tenure at Truecaller, Misra held a position as a communications manager at Meta, the parent company of Facebook. She has also worked at Ernst & Young and the Royal Danish Embassy in New Delhi, showcasing a diverse range of professional experiences.

Misra’s educational background includes an MBA from the International Management Institute, a Bachelor’s degree from Delhi University, and a Diploma in Bargaining and Negotiation from the London School of Economics and Political Science. Her expertise and qualifications position her well to navigate the complex landscape of AI regulation and policy development, particularly in a country as vast and dynamic as India.

Given India’s burgeoning population and rapidly expanding economy, it serves as a pivotal market for tech companies worldwide. OpenAI’s decision to establish a presence in India underscores the country’s significance in the global AI landscape. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has emphasized the importance of AI research and its potential to enhance government services, such as healthcare, during his visits to India.

During a visit to India last year, Altman met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting India’s status as the first country to adopt OpenAI’s generative-AI service, ChatGPT.
