PCMC urges industrial units to segregate waste into hazardous and non-hazardous
Industries oppose move to charge them more for the purpose
The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has asked the industrial units to segregate waste into hazardous or non-hazardous waste, after learning that the waste is just dumped into nullahs and open spaces. PCMC has directed industrial units in the Pimpri-Chinchwad-Bhosari MIDC areas to segregate their hazardous and non-hazardous waste, so that appropriate disposal can be carried out from January 1, 2023.
The Pimpri-Chinchwad-Bhosari MIDC area has between 5,000-10,000 small, medium and large industrial units. The area generates 35 tonnes of waste daily and this is thrown into nullahs and open spaces which is dangerous to the environment and for the public health.
Industrial units have welcomed this decision taken by the corporation but they have raised objections for the extra charges levied on them by PCMC.
Sharing his thoughts, Abhay Bhor, president of forum small scale industries association said, “We are happy that PCMC has taken this initiative to segregate hazardous and non-hazardous waste but we are against the extra taxes levied on us for this purpose. We don’t have good roads, good drainage systems, proper street lights, and security systems but still the industrial units have been paying crores of rupees to the PCMC as taxes. And now they are asking for more.”
Ajay Charthankar, health deputy commissioner, PCMC said that they have not yet worked out the charges to be taken from the industrial units.
“The industries will have to pay after every two months. The charges will be added to their property taxes. We will finalise the charges by next week. Nine vehicles of PCMC will be moving through the length and breadth of the Pimpri-Chinchwad-Bhosari MIDC area to collect the non-hazardous waste. We will give details about the collection point later,” he said.
