Pune: Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) is aiming to improve the road infrastructure in Pimpri Chinchwad city by taking into consideration the traffic conditions. As a result, it is working towards providing facilities for pedestrians, dedicated cycle paths for cyclists, and well-maintained roads for public transportation.

In accordance with the urban street design, the PCMC has established cycle tracks at various locations in the city, which have received positive feedback from citizens, including children. Shekhar Singh, PCMC Commissioner stated that the implementation of the project will contribute to reducing traffic congestion during a workshop held at Auto Cluster in Chinchwad.

Singh emphasized the need for certain changes in the existing traffic movement within the city. While the civic body is implementing several measures to alleviate traffic congestion, it is equally important to gather feedback from citizens on the effectiveness of these measures. The Green Bridge project, a unique initiative by the municipality, gained global recognition and received the Bloomberg Initiative for Cycling Infrastructure Award. The fact that Pimpri Chinchwad City was selected for this award after a thorough evaluation of 275 applications from 66 countries is a matter of pride for the city.

Singh also announced that the municipal corporation will launch a special drive in the first week of September to remove encroachments on footpaths in the city, thereby making it more convenient for citizens to use them. Vijay Kumar Khorate, Additional Commissioner emphasized that well-maintained roads are a reflection of a city’s progress and serve as a significant factor in the convenience of its residents. The construction of roads takes into consideration aspects such as structure, width, pedestrian paths, and cycle paths. If the bicycle or footpaths on the roads are not being utilized and are encroached upon, it becomes necessary to create awareness among citizens.

The media should cooperate with the municipal corporation in promoting this awareness, which will ultimately help reduce traffic congestion by encouraging people to use footpaths or cycle paths for shorter distances instead of relying on vehicles. Architect Prasanna Desai provided information about the Urban Streetscape project through a computer presentation during the event. He highlighted various aspects, including the condition of roads in different cities, the importance of trees, different types and arrangements of parking, beautification, and safety measures associated with road development. The program was proposed by co-city engineer Pramod Ombhase and moderated by Public Relations Officer Prafulla Puranik.
