Pimpri News : Lung billboard installed at Pimpri chowk turns black

Pimpri Chinchwad: The ‘Lungs Billboard’ in Pimpri Chinchwad showing air pollution turns black in 20 days. The ‘artificial lungs’ were installed at Babasaheb Ambedkar Chowk in Pimpri by Parisar and Pimpri Chowk by the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) on the 6 January 2023 to create awareness on health impacts of air pollution

It remained in the city for 30 days, whereas the board turned grey by February 4. The local air quality monitor on the board displayed the presence of PM 2.5 in the vicinity, a pollutant that is a concern for people’s health when its level in air is high.

“The lung billboard was installed at the most crowded chowk of Pimpri to create awareness amongst people about the severity of air pollution. The lung billboard turned black in very few days due to pollution.

“Usage of public transport and electric vehicles can play an important role in reducing air pollution. Whereas, on behalf of the PCMC, we are trying to take measures by installing air purifiers and also planning to start a road washer to reduce the pollutants,” said Sanjay Kulkarni, head of PCMC Environment department.

“Citizen engagement is extremely crucial for improving air quality and this billboard was a starting point for it. More focused and planned efforts for outreach are required in the city, as air pollution is affecting each one of us,” said Shweta Vernekar of Parisar.

Sharmila Deo of Parisar, said, “Creating awareness is a very important aspect in a robust city action plan that will address the pollution level in the city. The action plan needs to be made public so that all the stakeholders are aware of the actions being taken. All the departments of the Corporation as well as other stakeholders like the RTO, and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) have to work together to overcome the air pollution.”
