The Pavana river that divides the industrial twin towns of Pimpri-Chinchwad and Pune is resembling a slush drain. Social activists alleged that sewage water was being discharged into the river at Dapodi without any water treatment.

Social Activist Raviraj Baban Kale alleged that sewage water was being discharged without having any water treatment at Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in Dapodi. Raviraj Baban Kale said, “Since the last few days, large quantities of foam have been observed in Pavana river. When we investigated that, we found that, STP plant in Dapodi was not functional and hence sewage water was being discharged into the river without any treatment.

Raviraj Baban Kale said that, when he approached the concerned officials from the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, they assured to solve this problem.

“Civic body is nothing but playing with the health of the common people by discharging sewage water into riverbed. This may create serious health issues among the common people.’’ said Raviraj Kale.

Sohan Nikam, an environmental engineer at the Environmental Department of the PCMC said, this is not true that, STP plant in Dapodi is not working, in fact you can go and check. As far as foam is concerned, we think that there is something that is changed  in the chemical composition of water in inlet flow of sewage. We have sent sample report for the laboratory test and results are awaited.’’
