Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation has taken up an initiative to collect property tax from defaulters. The housing societies have received a list of tax defaulters. And failure in paying the taxes will result in suspension of water connection, warns PCMC. The civic body also plans to display the list of tax defaulters on the society notice board.

Accordingly, in an action carried out recently, the water connection of a few housing societies were cut, since defaulters were found in those societies. Opposing the move, the housing society association has written to Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Commissioner a letter to stop the action and use an alternate option of punishment for tax defaulters.

The letter states, “A campaign is currently going on by the tax collection department of PCMC for the recovery of overdue taxes. Under this campaign, the water supply of the entire society will be cut, after the defaulter fails to pay the property taxes. During the action the water connection of societies were cut down. This is very wrong and illegal. Also, please note that if this wrong and unjust campaign continues, then we will stage a huge protest in front of PCMC building with the society owners who have paid the full property tax.”

“We oppose the decision to cut the water connection of the whole society when only a few individual property holders are defaulters. Suspending the water connection of the entire society will cause severe inconvenience to the society. Therefore, we have written a letter to the PCMC Commissioner. In fact the suspension of water connection of a few housing societies took place recently, which caused great panic among the societies. If PCMC continues to suspend connection of the entire society, we shall stage a protest, ” said Sanjeevan Sangale, President of Chikhali Moshi Pimpri Chinchwad Housing Societies Federation

However, the PCMC tax collection official said that the disconnection of the water line will be of an individual person. Nilesh Deshmukh, Assistant Commissioner, tax department, PCMC said, “We have started making a list of people who haven’t paid the property tax. So thereafter, the list will be sent to housing societies and then it will be displayed on the notice board. Even after 10 days of getting notice, residents fail to pay the property tax, their individual water connection will be stopped and movable property will be seized.”
