PMC announces beautification of 15 VIP Roads in Pune

PUNE: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has received criticism for temporarily beautifying certain road stretches to impress VIP visitors during national or international events. However, yet again, the PMC has now made the decision to designate 15 stretches as ‘VIP roads’ year-round, ensuring that they receive timely repairs and beautification. Previously, the PMC faced backlash for only maintaining the roads in good condition to impress visitors and neglecting them afterwards.
While talking to Pune Pulse, Sahebrao Dandge, Executive Engineer, PMC added, ”The mentioned roads shall be maintained properly, as they serve as a means of connectivity for individuals outside the city. A team of 15 ‘road marshals’ has been designated, with each individual assigned to oversee the maintenance of one of the 15 selected roads to ensure optimal conditions. The road marshal team shall comprise traffic police, anti-encroachment inspectors, security guards and assistants. Their duties shall entail continuous monitoring of the designated road stretch throughout the day. The road marshal shall be held accountable for ensuring a hassle-free road with no traffic congestion or encroachments.”
Qaneez Sukhrani, an activist from Pune City, emphasized, “Beautification should not be superficial and should be carried out consistently. While it is important to present our city beautifully to G20 delegates, consistency is the key.”
Dhairyashil Vandekar from Koregaon Park added, ”PMC should prioritize making the roads free from encroachments before focusing on beautification. Additionally, he emphasized the need for repairing potholes throughout the city.”
