Pune: In the Khulewadi area of Kharadi, more than 400 trees were chopped by a private company in an open area for setting up a godown.

As per information, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has sent notices twice to the company; however, the process of chopping trees continues. As a result, the PMC is now going to issue notice for the third time.

Speaking to Pune Pulse, Sandeep Chavan, Horticulture Mistry, PMC Tree Department, Viman Nagar said, “The private land in Khulewadi, Kharadi belongs to a well-renowned company. An internal agreement took place between the private land owner & another company where the land was given on rent to the latter. Now, the latter party, taking the land on rent, must have already known that there are so many trees on the land, still the trees were cut. The PMC issued 2 notices earlier but there was no response from both parties. When PMC enquired about this to the land owner, the land owner held the latter responsible for this tree felling as the land owner had already given the land on rent to the latter. Hence, the PMC has issued a notice for the 3rd time.”

As per further information shared by Chavan, if there is no response for the 3rd notice, then a case will be filed in court where the court will take appropriate action about this.

Illegal felling of trees by landowners for widening and construction of roads under the PMC zonal office continues. It has come to light that when environmentalists complained, the PMC only issued notices instead of taking action.
