Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has sealed multiple properties of Sinhagad Technical Institute due to unpaid property tax amounting to ₹345 crore. The institute owns 128 properties across Pune city but faced no coercive action for most of them due to court orders, except for those in Kondhwa Bk., Ambegaon Bk., and Erandwane.

On December 6, 2024, PMC seized the Erandwane property over unpaid dues of ₹47.43 crore, invoking Rule 42 of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Act, 1949. Despite earlier orders to pay ₹12 crore, the institute failed to comply, leading to a contempt of court petition. Following legal advice, PMC also sealed properties in Kondhwa Bk. and Wadgaon Bk.

The action is part of PMC’s citywide tax recovery drive, which includes serving seizure notices to defaulters. Political groups have previously criticized the civic body for allegedly targeting small businesses while sparing large institutions. However, PMC cited legal hurdles as the reason for delays in action against bigger defaulters.

Madhav Jagtap, head of PMC’s property tax department, confirmed that the corporation is working to recover ₹93.24 crore from 438 government properties and ₹334.10 crore from the top 100 defaulters. Sinhagad Institute’s main office was sealed, but PMC ensured that students were not affected.

PMC has warned that further seizures will follow if outstanding dues are not paid, reinforcing strict tax enforcement across Pune.
