Pune: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will establish an ‘Urban Observatory’ to create infrastructure by continuously studying the expansion of the city, industry-business, population growth, increasing number of vehicles and much more.

Speaking to Pune Pulse, Vikas Dhakane, Assistant Municipal Commissioner, PMC said, “The Urban Observatory is planned to be started by the PMC in collaboration with Gokhale Institute. Recently, a meeting between the PMC & Gokhale Institute took place regarding the same. Further details about it will be out soon.”

As per further information, in the past few years, a network of educational institutions along with industries, businesses etc have been created in Pune. Therefore, the number of people settling here for employment and education is increasing. As the population is increasing, the number of private vehicles is also increasing as the means of public transport are not in proportion. Demand for housing is also increasing day by day.

All these stresses & other issues such as roads, water, electricity etc are taking place in Pune city. For civic works, the width of the roads is not increasing as the land acquisition process is very complicated. Be it a drainage line or a rain line, it has to be laid between the roads.

PMC Commissioner Vikram Kumar stated that there are many technical and financial difficulties in creating infrastructure at the speed at which the city is developing. It is necessary to make timely decisions and create facilities according to the needs of the city to make the lives of the citizens more bearable.

Roads also become difficult to repair. This creates many new problems like traffic congestion, noise and air pollution. The new areas in Pune are developing rapidly due to the relatively low cost and availability of housing in the newly developing areas. But, due to crowding in this area, there is a lack of land for other facilities like grounds, and parks, and the balance is getting worse.

Hence, an ‘Urban Observatory’ will be established by the PMC in the city to continuously study all the changes in Pune and take measures accordingly.
