Pune: The property tax department of the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has a major responsibility to manage the expenditure of the municipal corporation.

Therefore, special emphasis is being given to increasing the property tax revenue. With around five months remaining for the end of the financial year 2023-24, more than Rs 900 crore is needed to achieve the target.

For this, additional employees will be added to this department to crack down on defaulters.

Speaking to Pune Pulse, a PMC tax department official, requesting anonymity said, “Over Rs 900 crore property tax amount is to be recovered from property holders for this financial year. Hence, the property tax payment from defaulters will be recovered. Currently, court cases related to default in property tax payments are going on from which Rs 49 crore property tax revenue can be recovered. Property tax has been levied on new properties in Pune city as well. Also, several additional employees have been appointed. These personnel will be employed to seal properties, auction them and expedite the disposal of pending court cases.”

As per further information, the municipal budget has huge expenses for river bank improvement projects, Jaika projects, flyovers, subways including employee salaries, bonuses, daily maintenance works, electricity bills. Property tax, building development charges, GST, government grants etc are the sources of income to meet this expenditure.

The property tax department is making efforts to increase the regular property tax payment. But at the same time, emphasis is being placed on commercial use of residential properties, issuing notices to unauthorized builders and levying triple tax, sealing buildings of non-paying citizens, auctioning them, levying property tax on new constructions and collecting it.
