Kothrud residents raise alarm over contaminated water supply post-maintenance, demanding immediate action from PMC.

Residents of Kothrud, Pune, were left distressed on Friday after receiving polluted drinking water from their taps, following a scheduled water supply cut the previous day. Many locals reported that the water was not only muddy but also emitted a foul odor, sparking fears that sewage or drainage water might have contaminated the drinking supply. Concerned residents, especially families with children and senior citizens, have called on the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to take swift action to resolve the issue.

The water supply cut was part of the PMC’s routine maintenance work at key distribution points, including the Parvati water plant and the Bhama Askhed pipeline. Water services were supposed to resume on Friday at lower pressure but residents not only experienced delays in restoration but also found the supplied water to be severely polluted. A resident from Mahatma Society voiced fears of potential health hazards, stating that prolonged exposure to such contaminated water could lead to waterborne diseases, particularly for vulnerable groups.

Civic authorities have acknowledged the problem, attributing it to the possibility of dirt and debris in the pipes being released once the water supply resumed. Officials assured that further inspections would be conducted to identify the cause and resolve the issue. In the meantime, residents have been advised to purify the water before consumption as a safety precaution.

The incident has reignited concerns about water management in urban areas, with many urging the PMC to implement sustainable solutions that ensure a continuous and safe water supply, particularly during routine maintenance.
