Pune is rapidly emerging as Maharashtra’s gaming capital, driven by a post-pandemic surge in gaming centers and a growing number of professional gamers.

Fifteen years ago, the streets of Pune were filled with children playing cricket using soft-drink baskets as makeshift stumps. Today, however, the landscape has changed. Video games on smartphones and gaming consoles have taken over, reflecting a nationwide shift toward digital gaming.

India’s gaming industry has witnessed an unprecedented boom, with more than 45 crore gamers, according to government figures from the Invest India website. Pune, in particular, is riding this wave, with gaming centers mushrooming across the city to meet the increasing demand.

The Covid-19 pandemic acted as a catalyst for Pune’s gaming industry. Post-pandemic, gaming centers have reported a surge in foot traffic. “Before the pandemic, we had around 40-50 visitors a day. Now, we see around 70-80,” says the owner of Intencity. This shift in leisure activities toward gaming has significantly boosted the city’s gaming culture.

Pune’s institutions are also embracing this trend. The Institute of Sports Science and Technology (ISST) has established an esports center, complete with gaming consoles, virtual reality setups, and even a car simulator. The center also organizes monthly gaming tournaments, adding to the city’s thriving esports scene.

Pune’s gaming boom is part of a larger nationwide trend as gaming becomes increasingly integrated into Indian society. However, challenges remain. Unlike other countries, Indian gamers still struggle for recognition and respect. The lack of government support for gaming professionals is a significant hurdle. Advocates believe that greater involvement from the government could provide much-needed legitimacy and encouragement for the industry, fostering a more stable and respected environment for gamers.
