Poor Response To HSRP Number Plate Installation In PuneÂ
The installation of high-security registration plates (HSRPs) on older vehicles in Pune is witnessing limited public participation, despite a looming government deadline. As per transport department regulations, all vehicles registered before April 1, 2019, must be fitted with HSRPs by June 30, 2025.
Currently, Pune has approximately 25 lakh vehicles falling under this requirement. Yet, as of May 22, only around 4.6 lakh vehicle owners have completed online registration for HSRP installation, with just about 2.08 lakh vehicles actually equipped with the new plates.
In response to this slow progress, officials from the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) have once again urged citizens to comply before the end-of-June cutoff. The department has warned that those failing to meet the deadline will face fines and other penalties.
To simplify the process, more than 150 authorized centres have been opened across the city. An online system has also been introduced to streamline registrations and bookings. However, many residents say the digital interface lacks reliability.
The RTO continues to push for increased awareness and timely action as the June 30 deadline approaches.
