Pune: A disturbing scam known as the ‘Puncture Scam’ has surfaced in Pune, targeting unsuspecting riders who fall victim to a deceptive ploy. In this scheme, riders are informed of low tire pressure, only to be taken advantage of by unscrupulous puncture shop owners who claim numerous punctures, coercing the victims into paying exorbitant amounts for unnecessary repairs or replacements.

On November 28, a distressing incident unfolded involving an individual heading to Command Hospital on his motorcycle. Informed of low tire pressure, he was taken to a local shop where he was charged Rs 1600, alleging a staggering 16 punctures in his tire. Realizing the deceit, the victim promptly reported the incident to the Yerawada police station.

The modus operandi of the Puncture Fraud is as follows:

Fraudsters observe vehicle drivers and approach them, claiming a flat or low tire. The drivers are then led to a puncture shop, where a concoction of soapy water and shampoo is applied to the tire. Bubbles emerge, convincing the driver of a puncture. Exploiting the situation, the shop owner falsely insists on multiple punctures, capitalizing on the driver’s urgency to extort money. Police estimate daily earnings of puncture shopkeepers to be between Rs 5,000 to 10,000, as they manipulate drivers into unnecessary purchases of new tires or tubes.

To safeguard against such scams, here are some Do’s and Don’ts:

Do’s & Don’ts

  • Regularly check tire pressure.
  • Consult a trusted shopkeeper if you suspect a puncture.
  • Observe the shopkeeper’s movements and tools during tire inspection.
  • If told of a puncture, attempt to drive the vehicle after inflating it with air.
  • Exercise caution and avoid immediate decisions based solely on the puncture shop owner’s claims.
