Pune, May 19 — A 12-year-old boy lost his life after being hit by a speeding SUV at Bholenath Chowk in Pune’s Kondhwa Budruk area on Sunday evening. The incident took place around 4:15 pm and led to the arrest of the 23-year-old driver, Zaid Naseer Shaikh.
According to the Kondhwa police, the deceased was identified as Nivrutti Bajirai Kisve, whose family had recently moved to Pune from Latur district. Kisve was critically injured in the accident and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Eyewitnesses said Shaikh, who was driving a Toyota Innova, was allegedly speeding and lost control of the vehicle, which also crashed into the gate of a nearby residential society. Locals quickly intervened, detaining the driver and handing him over to the police.
Senior Inspector Vinay Patankar of Kondhwa Police Station confirmed that an FIR was registered by the victim’s relative, Pradeep Karle. Shaikh has been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for rash driving and causing death by negligence, along with provisions under the Motor Vehicles Act. The SUV has also been seized.
“A breathalyser test conducted on the driver returned negative for alcohol consumption. He was sent to Sassoon General Hospital for further medical examination. We are awaiting the report,” said Inspector Patankar. “A panchnama has been completed, and CCTV footage from the vicinity is being reviewed to ascertain the sequence of events.”
Preliminary information suggests that Kisve’s father works as a labourer. The police investigation is ongoing.
