Generous act saves lives in Pune Zone

Family members of a brain-dead 13-year-old boy have consented to donate his vital organs, impacting four patients across three hospitals. The organs were carefully transported from Solapur’s Chandan Neurosciences Hospital (CHS) on Thursday morning, after the boy was declared brain dead on Wednesday evening.

The boy’s lungs were sent to DPU Super Specialty Hospital, one kidney and liver to Ruby Hall Clinic, and another kidney to Sassoon General Hospital, marking the latter’s first deceased organ transplant of the year.

Dr. Pallavi Mehta, an intensivist at CHS, confirmed that the boy’s lungs, kidneys, liver, and corneas were all deemed suitable for transplantation.

Dr. Sandeep Attawar, Director of Heart and Lung Transplant at DPU Super Specialty Hospital, noted that the recipient of the lungs was suffering from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. At Sassoon General Hospital, one of the kidneys was transplanted into a 13-year-old boy from Daund. Dr. Yallapa Jadhav, the hospital’s Medical Superintendent, confirmed this development. The remaining kidney and liver were successfully transplanted at Ruby Hall Clinic, where Dr. Prasad Muglikar, Medical Director, described the organs as life-saving for two children.

Aarti Gokhale from the Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre reported that this donation marks the 40th deceased organ donor in the Pune zone for the year. A green corridor was established to ensure the swift transport of the organs from Solapur to Pune.
