Pune: 7-Year-Old Boy Dies After Being Trapped Inside Housing Society Lift for 1.5 Hours on Sinhagad Road
Pune, 20th May 2026: A tragic incident took place in Pune’s Sinhagad Road area where a 7-year-old boy lost his life after allegedly getting trapped inside a lift for nearly one and a half hours at a residential society.
The deceased child has been identified as Shivansh Shailesh Dhut. The incident occurred at Riddhi Siddhi Apartment in Nimbajinagar on Tuesday night.
According to police, Shivansh was playing inside the housing society premises around 10 pm, as he usually did. During this time, he reportedly entered the building’s lift and pressed one of the buttons. The lift started moving but suddenly stopped midway before reaching the second floor, leaving the child trapped inside.
When Shivansh did not return home for a long time, his family members and residents of the society began searching for him. As the search continued, residents suspected that the lift might have malfunctioned and got stuck.
Police and the fire brigade were informed around 11.30 pm. A rescue team from the fire department along with Sinhagad Road Police reached the spot and opened the lift after efforts to access the stalled cabin. However, the child was found unconscious inside.
Police suspect Shivansh may have died due to being trapped in the enclosed lift for a prolonged period, though the exact cause of death will be confirmed only after the postmortem report.
Initial investigation has not found any major technical fault in the lift so far. Police said the responsibility for lift maintenance lies with the housing society management.
Sinhagad Road Police have registered an accidental death report and further investigation is ongoing.
