Renowned social activist Dr. Baba Adhav has raised a clarion call against what he describes as the systematic erosion of democracy in India. “Today, democracy in this country is being stripped bare,” he declared, launching a three-day hunger strike at the historic Mahatma Phule Wada in Pune. Dr. Adhav emphasized that citizens must take to the streets to protect their rights and, if necessary, engage in satyagraha to oppose the current regime.

Concerns Over EVMs and Electoral Integrity
Dr. Adhav also voiced doubts about the integrity of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), suggesting there is room for suspicion. He noted anomalies in vote tallies after polling and criticized the increasing misuse of state resources during elections. “In the recent assembly elections, public funds were blatantly misused. Voters must not succumb to such financial lures. Continuous changes in post-poll data raise valid concerns about the reliability of EVMs,” he said.

A Stand Against Oppression and Communal Division
Dr. Adhav expressed alarm at the divisive tactics employed by the government, including the stoking of Hindu-Muslim tensions. He urged socially conscious citizens to speak out against such oppression, highlighting that even one individual’s voice can be a powerful force in a democracy. “Society’s vigilant sections must oppose this muzzling of dissent. The strength of democracy lies in the ability of even a lone individual to raise their voice,” he remarked.

Condemnation of Government Policies
The activist did not mince words when criticizing the government’s handling of corporate controversies. Referring to the Adani issue, he said, “When the Adani affair came to light, the Prime Minister openly backed them from foreign soil. Meanwhile, efforts are being made to ensure this matter is not discussed in Parliament. This is shameful and tarnishes our democracy.”

Support from Political Leaders
Dr. Adhav’s hunger strike, which began on Thursday and will continue until November 30, has drawn attention from political leaders. Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Chhagan Bhujbal, attending the Mahatma Phule Samata Puraskar event at the same venue, visited Dr. Adhav to express solidarity and advised him to take care of his health. MLA Rohit Pawar also met with the activist, offering support for his cause.

Dr. Baba Adhav’s protest reflects growing unrest among activists and opposition leaders, who fear that unchecked governmental policies and electoral malpractices are undermining the democratic foundation of the nation. His call for public awakening and action could inspire broader movements against perceived injustices in the system.
