Pune Airport Passengers Face Overcrowding Woes Despite New Terminal

Despite the operationalization of a new terminal over three months ago, passengers flying out of Pune Airport continue to face overcrowding issues at the old terminal. The airport recorded 200 flight movements on Sunday, with officials expecting an increase as the winter schedule approaches.

37 flights, including those of SpiceJet, IndiGo (excluding Pune-Delhi sector), and two international flights to Dubai and Singapore, still operate from the old terminal. This has led to long delays at security checkpoints, frustrating passengers. Vinayak Shinde, who flew to Chennai at 4:00 am, tweeted, “Again, the situation at Pune Airport has collapsed completely. Long queues for security checks even after arriving 2 hours before flight time.”

Another passenger, who wished to remain anonymous, shared their experience, “I entered the security check queue around 2:50 am and didn’t get through until 3:35 am. This happens frequently, especially in the early hours.” Passengers have taken to social media to express their frustration, highlighting the need for improved infrastructure and management.

IndiGo attributed the continued use of the old terminal to directives from airport officials. However, airport authorities have remained tight-lipped about the overcrowding issues. An official acknowledged, “Occasionally, flight delays cause bottlenecks, but CISF personnel manage the situation as best they can.”

Passengers have also raised concerns about conditions at the new terminal. A frequent flyer noted, “I believe both terminals are being kept operational to handle increased travel during Diwali season, which is smart. However, the infrastructure at both buildings should handle crowds without these problems.”

With passenger volumes expected to rise, Pune Airport authorities must address these concerns to ensure a smoother travel experience. The airport’s inability to effectively utilize its new terminal has raised questions about its preparedness for the upcoming winter schedule.

Effective management and infrastructure upgrades are crucial to alleviating overcrowding woes. Passengers hope for a seamless travel experience as the winter schedule approaches. Pune Airport authorities must prioritize passenger convenience and address these concerns promptly.
