Viman Nagar, June 10, 2025: In a major step to ease traffic congestion at Pune International Airport’s new terminal, authorities are planning to introduce a strict time limit for private vehicles picking up or dropping off passengers. The rule, expected to be enforced within a month, will limit vehicle waiting time to 10–15 minutes. Any vehicle exceeding this time will have to pay a penalty.

This measure is being introduced in response to persistent traffic snarls, especially during late evening hours, when more than a hundred vehicles are often seen crowding the terminal access area. Many private drivers reportedly arrive well in advance—sometimes 30 to 40 minutes before their passengers—causing unnecessary congestion and ignoring airport instructions to vacate the area promptly.

This is the first time Pune Airport will implement a time-based parking restriction, bringing it in line with other major airports like Chennai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru, where a similar 10-minute limit is already in force. At those airports, violators are fined between ₹500 and ₹1,500 depending on the delay.

A dedicated committee is currently working on the finer details of the time-limit policy. Once the report is submitted, it will be forwarded to the airport’s headquarters for interim approval before being officially enforced.

Even after deploying 12 traffic wardens and issuing repeated warnings, many drivers continue to loiter near the terminal. The upcoming timed parking system is expected to streamline vehicle movement, reduce congestion, and significantly enhance the overall travel experience for passengers using the new terminal.
