Pune: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted that both minimum and maximum temperatures in Pune and across Maharashtra will remain above normal levels at least until February 5, 2025. This trend is attributed to weak northerly winds and prevailing anticyclonic conditions.

SD Sanap, Senior Meteorologist at IMD Pune, stated, “Northerly cool winds significantly influence winter temperatures in Maharashtra. However, this season, except for a few days in November and December, their impact has been minimal, leading to fewer cold days.

Anticyclonic conditions over Central Maharashtra have resulted in higher daytime temperatures, with Pune and other regions recording maximum temperatures above normal.”

IMD’s Director General, Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, highlighted in the monthly outlook that February 2025 is likely to witness above-normal minimum temperatures across most of India, except for parts of Northwest and South Peninsular India.

Maximum temperatures are expected to be normal to above normal, with some areas in West Central and Southern Peninsular India likely to experience below-normal maximum temperatures.

Additionally, weak La Niña conditions are currently prevailing over the equatorial Pacific, with below-normal sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific Ocean. These conditions are expected to persist until April 2025, followed by a transition to ENSO-neutral conditions.
