Pune Auto-Rickshaw Drivers Reap Benefits as Uber Adopts Zero-Commission Model
Pune – Auto-rickshaw drivers in Pune are experiencing financial relief after Uber transitioned to a zero-commission model, allowing them to retain the full fare and negotiate directly with passengers. The change, implemented in February, has removed cancellation charges and given both drivers and riders the freedom to set fares, with Uber staying out of disputes.
Under Uber’s new Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model, the app now functions solely as a platform to connect riders with nearby auto-rickshaws. However, the service itself operates independently from Uber’s traditional ride-hailing model, meaning passengers must pay drivers directly via cash or UPI. The fare suggested by Uber is now merely a recommendation rather than a fixed price.
Drivers Welcome the Change
Many auto-rickshaw drivers have praised the policy shift, highlighting its positive impact on their earnings and work flexibility.
Rajesh sunnewar, an Uber auto-rickshaw driver, shared his experience: “Earlier, Uber took a commission from our fares, reducing our income significantly. Now, we keep 100% of what we earn and can negotiate fares based on real-time conditions like traffic. Plus, with no cancellation charges, there are fewer disputes with passengers.”
Suresh Waghmare, another driver, emphasized the advantage of direct payments. “Without Uber managing payments, I feel more independent. Digital payments often caused delays, but now, with cash or UPI, I receive my earnings immediately. Negotiating fares directly with passengers also ensures that I’m fairly compensated, especially during peak hours.”
Sandeep sen, another Uber auto-rickshaw driver, highlighted how removing fixed fares has improved his earnings. “Earlier, we had to rely on Uber’s fixed pricing, which didn’t always account for rising fuel costs or route diversions. Now, I can discuss the fare upfront with passengers, and most of them understand the need for fair pricing.”
A Win-Win Situation for Drivers and Riders
With greater financial control and flexibility, Pune’s auto-rickshaw drivers see Uber’s zero-commission model as a welcome change. The ability to negotiate fares directly and receive full earnings has created a fairer and more sustainable system for both drivers and passengers.
