The BJ Medical College (BJMC) and Sassoon General Hospital (SGH) will soon have a state-of-the-art 250-bed Super Specialty Hospital and Post Graduate Institute. Officials confirmed that a proposal for the facility was sent to the medical education department on Thursday.

The hospital will be developed over 31 lakh square feet and housed in a 16-story building. BJMC officials have proposed setting up the facility within the SGH campus.

Currently, departments such as neurosurgery, cardiothoracic surgery, plastic surgery, and pediatric surgery operate with 20–30 beds each. Once the Super Specialty Hospital is operational, these departments will double their bed capacity, officials said.

At present, SGH and BJMC have a combined bed capacity of 1,293, which has recently been expanded to 1,700. The hospital also includes 140 ICU beds across departments such as NICU, MICU, PICU, Trauma ICU, and SICU.

SGH handles a heavy patient load, with 2,500 to 3,000 patients visiting its outpatient department (OPD) daily. Additionally, around 500 minor and major procedures are conducted every day.

The new facility is expected to enhance medical services significantly, especially in super-specialty treatments. The project aims to cater to the growing healthcare demands in Pune and neighboring regions.
