Pune: Citizens’ Pressure Forces PMC To Cover Hazardous Open Manhole In Mohammadwadi
Pune, May 9, 2026: A potentially dangerous open manhole near Ganga Kingston at NIBM Annexe in Mohammadwadi was finally secured after local citizens and journalists repeatedly raised concerns over public safety and alleged civic negligence.
Residents said the uncovered chamber had remained exposed for several days on a busy stretch of road, posing a serious threat to pedestrians, motorists and daily commuters. Despite the risk of a major accident, locals claimed that no immediate action was taken by the concerned authorities.
The issue gained attention after citizen activist Jaymala Dhankikar and Nadeem Inamdar persistently followed up with civic officials and highlighted the danger caused by the open manhole.
Following continuous pressure and escalation of the matter, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) reportedly intervened and secured the chamber by installing a proper cover.
Residents stated that the incident once again highlighted concerns over delayed civic response and lack of preventive safety measures in rapidly developing areas such as Mohammadwadi.
Citizens also pointed out that while the immediate hazard has now been addressed, broader issues related to infrastructure maintenance, civic accountability and water tanker operations in the locality still remain unresolved.
Locals emphasised that ensuring public safety should be a basic responsibility of the administration and not something achieved only after repeated citizen intervention.
