Pune Citizens Urge PMC To Remove Harmful Artificial Lights From Trees

Pune, November 19, 2024: In a bid to protect the city’s greenery, over 265 citizens have signed an online petition urging the Pune Municipal Corporation’s (PMC) Tree Authority to remove artificial lights and other harmful objects from trees across the city. The initiative highlights growing concerns over the environmental and legal implications of such practices.

Decorating trees with lights, banners, nails, and wires has become common among shops and commercial establishments. However, experts warn that these actions disrupt the natural day-night cycle of trees, affecting their growth and reproductive processes. Trees rely on natural light for vital biological activities, including photosynthesis and dormancy, which can be impaired by artificial lighting.

“This practice acts as a slow poison for trees,” said Madhav Patil, a founder member of the citizen group Angholichi Goli, which spearheaded the petition. “It is not only harmful but also violates the Maharashtra (Urban Areas) Protection and Preservation of Trees Act, 1975.”

Petition Highlights:
The petition, initiated last week, calls for the PMC Tree Authority to take immediate action against the use of artificial lighting and other encroachments on trees. It emphasizes the need for better enforcement of laws to preserve Pune’s green cover.

“More citizens need to come forward to demand action. The sooner we raise our collective voices, the faster the PMC will act,” added Patil.

The campaign has gained significant traction, with residents from across Pune joining the effort to protect trees. The group plans to submit the petition to the PMC Tree Authority soon, urging stricter measures to prevent further damage to urban greenery.

This initiative underscores the growing awareness and active participation of citizens in safeguarding the city’s ecological balance while demanding accountability from authorities.
