Pune City To Get New Addl CP and DCP To Oversee Traffic Management
PUNE: In response to the growing number of vehicles in Pune, Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the appointment of an Additional Commissioner of Police (Addl CP) and a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) to enhance traffic management in the city. These new roles are intended to address the increasing challenges posed by Pune’s expanding urban landscape.
Speaking at an event held at the Pune city police headquarters in Shivajinagar on Friday, Fadnavis inaugurated or laid the foundation stones for several projects under the state home department. These projects, valued at over ₹700 crore, included the inauguration of seven new police stations, the launch of the ‘CCTV Phase II’ initiative, and the groundbreaking for a new building for the Pune city commissionerate and Bund Garden police station.
Additionally, the government has secured 50 acres of land for the Pimpri-Chinchwad police commissionerate. Fadnavis also inaugurated new facilities, including the Assistant Commissioner of Police office in Tulinj, Palghar district, and the Bolinj police station under the Mira-Bhayandar-Vasai-Virar Police Commissionerate via videoconference.
Fadnavis emphasized that Pune’s rapid urbanization has brought challenges such as increased crime and traffic congestion. He highlighted the introduction of advanced technology, including artificial intelligence (AI) in the adaptive traffic management system (ATMS) and drone cameras to monitor and streamline traffic in the city.
Fadnavis further noted that this year marked significant changes in the city’s policing framework, with the establishment of new police stations for the first time since 1960. In addition, he cited a record-breaking recruitment of over 40,000 police personnel during his tenure as home minister.
