Pune Crime: Lawyer of Swargate Rape Case Accused Kidnapped, Beaten at Dive Ghat

In a shocking turn of events, Sahil Dongre, the lawyer representing Datta Gade, the accused in the Swargate rape case, was allegedly kidnapped and assaulted on March 17. Dongre was forcibly taken from Hadapsar to Dive Ghat, where he was brutally beaten before being released. Following the attack, he filed a complaint at Hadapsar police station while seeking medical attention.

Background of the Swargate Rape Case

According to reports, the incident dates back to February 26, when a young woman was raped on a Shivshahi bus at Pune’s Swargate bus depot. The accused, Datta Gade, allegedly engaged the victim in conversation before leading her to the bus, where the crime was committed. After the assault, Gade fled the scene but was arrested by Pune Police 75 hours later in Gunat village.

Kidnapping and Assault of Lawyer

On March 17, Dongre, an assistant to lead defense lawyer Wajid Khan, was abducted in Hadapsar and taken to Dive Ghat, where he was assaulted. He was later released, and the motive behind the attack remains unclear. Dongre is currently undergoing treatment at Sassoon Hospital.

Controversial Court Statements

During court proceedings, lead counsel Wajid Khan made contentious statements, questioning the victim’s credibility. He suggested that the incident could not have been forced as it occurred in the morning and argued that the victim could have screamed for help.

Khan also alleged that the victim accepted ₹7,500 from the accused, implying a consensual act.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the kidnapping and assault of Dongre. Further updates are awaited.
