Pune News: Allegations of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Surface at SPPU Girls’ Hostel, ABVP Demands Inquiry
Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has once again come under scrutiny, this time due to reports of rampant alcohol consumption in its girls’ hostel. Photos and videos of students drinking inside the hostel have surfaced, raising serious concerns about hostel security and administration.
Over the past year, SPPU has been embroiled in multiple controversies, including the discovery of marijuana in the boys’ hostel and illegal tobacco sales on campus. A female student residing in the hostel had repeatedly reported such incidents to the women’s hostel authorities, but no action was taken. Left with no other option, she escalated the issue by writing to the acting registrar and vice-chancellor.
A major question arises regarding security lapses—how are large quantities of alcohol and other intoxicants entering the hostel despite biometric security at the gate? Are hostel staff involved in facilitating these activities?
Allegations have also emerged that instead of addressing the issue, some faculty members pressured the complainant. Furthermore, a shocking revelation states that a male professor from a free study center was found inside the girls’ hostel without permission, raising further security concerns.
The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has demanded a formal inquiry committee to investigate the matter. They insist on strict action against those responsible, including the suspension of hostel staff who ignored complaints. If the administration fails to act, ABVP has warned of strong protests to ensure a drug-free campus.
