A recent survey conducted by environmental researchers has revealed a concerning trend along the Mutha River Bank. The survey, spanning a 22-kilometer stretch between Khadakwasla and Bund Garden, found only 243 plant species, marking a significant decline in biodiversity.

Comparisons with a survey from 1958 underscored the severity of the situation. Back then, a total of 400 plant species were documented along a 12-kilometer stretch connecting Vitthalwadi and Yerwada. This stark contrast highlights the loss of approximately 200 plant species over the years.

Variations in species distribution were notable, with Vitthalwadi boasting the highest count of 100 species, followed by Khadakwasla Dam with 93 species. Conversely, the Sambhaji Udyans backside area exhibited the lowest diversity, with just over 60 species recorded.

The research, led by Uma Kalamkar of Maharashtra Vruksha Samvardhini, Ankur Patwardhan from the Department of Biodiversity at Abasaheb Garware College, Pune, and the late Dilip Kulkarni, a Taxonomist with BAIF Development Research Foundation, sheds light on the detrimental impact of river channelization on marshy lands, which has contributed to this decline in biodiversity.

Kalamkar emphasized the role of urbanization as a major driver of biodiversity loss, citing its impact on landscapes and water systems, leading to environmental degradation.

Addressing this issue requires concerted efforts. Suggestions include the construction of sewage treatment plants, halting deforestation, proper garbage disposal, and refraining from using cement near riverbanks. These measures are crucial for mitigating further decline and restoring the ecological balance along the Mutha River Bank.
